The prevailing wisdom in some secondary schools is that students don’t want their parents involved, and that parents can no longer help with learning because they do not understand the work. Nothing could be further from the truth! Medina received the Leading Parent Partnership Award (LPPA), a nationally recognised award that provides a coherent framework through which schools and other educational organisations can deliver effective parental engagement from early years to post-16.
We value the induction of parents when their children join the college - really encouraging their involvement from the outset through:
Developing creative and practical ways to engage parents with their children’s learning, especially ones that do not involve understanding the detailed ins and outs of the secondary school curriculum!
Improving communication between home and college, particularly using the ‘new technologies’ to support this, e.g. texting, email, the college’s website and the virtual learning environment.
Being really aware of the issues facing the college in communicating with all parents, and developing strategies to break down barriers and get them involved.
Developing effective consultation strategies – listening to and acting upon parents’ and carers’ positive suggestions.
Students behave better and achieve more when their parents are involved in their education. Their concerns can be resolved more quickly when their parents have a positive relationship with the college.
Parents benefit from being able to express their views and knowing that they are able to make a difference. They also benefit from meeting and working with others in a setting in which they feel comfortable and from the advice and guidance the college and other parents are able to give them in supporting their children with their learning. As a parent-led group, the Parent Voice does not require involvement from the governing body or college staff in its day-to-day running. However, we are making a real difference through our close and constructive relationship with the college and have the full support of the governing body and college leadership team. We have a link on the college website and our own Facebook page.
